During Storm Babet, a significant area of retaining wall had collapsed below a private property, threatening the security of the structure.
Main issue:
– Access restrictions
– Proximity to others and public
– Remote location
– Topography
The access within the village to the site location was very narrow, below 0.8m at points with the village being on a signifcant slope. The width meant that no plant could be taken to the works location. Instead large compressor was taken to the closets point in the village and the air hose was routed via private gardens and walkways.
With the centre of the wall falling away from the rest of the wall the frst task was to make safe the remaining wall. Next 6 soil nails where installed using a mobile drilling mast in preparation to accept our Erdox grids. These are used to replace the failed wall however at 3m x 2.4m they could not be taken through the village.
Utilising a MD 500D helicopter we lifted the two grids around the village from a lay down field on the outskirts of the village. Within 5 minutes both grids where in there final resting place.
The grids where bolted down and backflled with a mix of the failed wall and new stone Brough in with tracked barrows.
Lastly the wall was tied into the new grids and a further 6 soil nails where installed through the adjacent wall in order to secure.
